Marianne Poon, CFA, MBA
Founder and Financial Advisor

I founded Onyx Financial because I saw too many families navigating complex financial transitions without the caliber of advice they deserved. My practice focuses on two areas where I can make the greatest difference: partnering with estate planning attorneys to serve clients managing wealth transfers and inheritance, and helping adult children organize and oversee their aging parents' finances.
Before launching Onyx, I spent my career in institutional asset management, supporting portfolio managers responsible for more than $4 billion in pension assets across fixed income and equity at Manulife Financial (John Hancock's parent company). I bring that same institutional rigor to every client relationship, but with the personal attention that only a boutique, fee-only practice can offer.
As a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA Charterholder since 2005) and fee-only fiduciary, my work spans asset allocation, risk management, tax-aware investment strategies, retirement planning, and coordinating finances across generations. I hold an MBA from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto.
I am passionate about helping clients optimize their finances through tax-advantaged strategies, including planned giving. As a legacy member of both the WETA Legacy Society and Washington Concert Opera, I understand firsthand the power of charitable giving and enjoy guiding clients to maximize their impact while supporting the causes that matter most to them.
I work with a select number of clients who value a hands-on, personalized approach. If you are looking for an advisor who will know your situation inside and out and treat your finances with the same care she would her own family's, I would welcome the conversation.
Outside of my advisory work, I lead a multidisciplinary life enriched by the arts. I am a classically trained pianist with an Associate Diploma (ARCT) in Piano Performance from The Royal Conservatory of Music and a Registered Piano Technician. In my free time, I enjoy swimming and spending time with my wife and dog in Bethesda.
